Center Action Fund Endorses Marie Newman for Illinois’ 6th Congressional District
LAGRANGE, Ill.— The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, the 501(c)(4) political arm of the Center for Biological Diversity, announced today that it is endorsing Rep. Marie Newman in the Democratic primary in Illinois’ 6th Congressional District.
“Since her first day in Congress, Rep. Newman has shown she’s a fierce champion of the environment and understands that we need to act with urgency to save life on earth,” said Kierán Suckling, president of the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund. “Her commitment to fight both the climate emergency and extinction crisis by offering bold solutions in Congress are admirable, and we’re proud to endorse her.”
In June 2021 Newman introduced the Extinction Crisis Emergency Act, which would direct the president to declare the wildlife extinction crisis a national emergency and spur action across the entire federal government to stem the loss of animals and plants in the United States and around the world.
Newman, who does not take corporate political action committee contributions, has also signed the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge, promising not to accept large donations from fossil fuel PACs, executives or lobbyists. She is supportive of the Green New Deal and the National Climate Emergency Act, which would direct the president to declare the climate crisis a national emergency.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund in IL-06,” said Congresswoman Marie Newman. “We are living in a climate crisis, and we need more than empty platitudes—we need action now. I pledge to continue working in close partnership alongside champions for environmental justice so we can protect our planet for generations to come.”
Newman is challenging Rep. Sean Casten, a moderate Democrat who has failed to offer bold solutions to address the environmental crises the United States now faces. Casten has not endorsed the Green New Deal resolution or the Climate Emergency Act, and he continues to take campaign contributions from the fossil fuel industry.
The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund is a national nonprofit organization that advocates for legislation and legislators that will advance a progressive environmental agenda. The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund is the 501(c)(4) affiliate of the Center for Biological Diversity, but these organizations’ names are not interchangeable.
