Environmental Groups Endorse Lateefah Simon for Congress
OAKLAND, Calif.— A coalition of national environmental advocacy organizations announced today its endorsement of Lateefah Simon for California’s 12th Congressional District.
A veteran activist with decades of experience, Simon is a proven champion for environmental justice and the only candidate in this race with a clear understanding of the climate crisis, the coalition says. Simon’s advocacy career, lived experience, and expertise as an elected director of Bay Area Rapid Transit have showcased her ability to tackle the most pressing environmental issues with progressive policies.
“We need bold leaders who not only understand our climate and extinction crises but are willing to immediately work to address them,” said Karuna Jaggar, California political director at the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund. “Lateefah Simon is the only candidate in this race with the expertise and experience to deliver on progressive climate solutions. Simon has the courage to take on the oil and gas industry so California can lead the way to a full, fair fossil fuel phase-out.”
The groups endorsing Simon are the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, Climate Hawks Vote, Food & Water Action, Friends of the Earth Action, Oil Change U.S., and Zero Hour.
Simon is also the only candidate in this race who has publicly pledged to reject all campaign contributions from the fossil fuel lobby. By signing the Green New Deal Champions pledge, she has committed to championing bold climate legislation if elected to Congress.
“Lateefah Simon is an impressive community organizer who has consolidated support from both establishment Democrats and progressive organizations. She’ll stand up against the fossil fuel industry and for her community,” said R.L. Miller, president of Climate Hawks Vote.
“Lateefah Simon will continue Rep. Barbara Lee’s legacy of principled progressivism,” said Sam Bernhardt, political director of Food & Water Action. “Lateefah knows first-hand the human cost of burning fossil fuels, and she’ll work with our movement to fight for environmental justice.”
“Lateefah Simon is the type of bold environmental champion we need in Washington,” said Ariel Moger, political director of Friends of the Earth Action. “She is a fierce advocate for climate justice who will continue to fight for her community and not bend to the oil and gas industry. Lateefah is an inspiration that we will continue to support, and urge Californians to do so as well.”
“Lateefah Simon’s impressive record of standing up for working people, not big polluters, is exactly the leadership California’s 12th District needs. She understands the difference between climate action and climate justice and she will help champion the fight for a fair and funded phaseout of fossil fuels,” said Collin Rees, political director of Oil Change U.S.
